Women's Support Q & A

Why are women affected by mental health problems more than men?

Women are more than twice as likely to experience mental health disorders like anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Although some disorders, like attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), do affect men more, women are generally affected disproportionately by mental health disorders.

There’s not one simple answer for why this happens. Many factors may play a role, including:

  • Hormone changes during pregnancy, menopause, and other periods
  • Brain anatomy differences
  • Unequal roles in the home
  • Unequal treatment in the workplace
  • Pay inequality
  • Societal pressure

Women are also more likely than men to be the victims of sexual harassment, assault, and violence, all of which can contribute to poor mental health.

Additionally, women are far more likely to be primary caregivers, from child care to looking after elderly parents, which can add enormous pressure and stress that affects mental health.

What are the signs that you need women’s support?
